The Legacy of Welles Remy Crowther: The Man in the Red Bandanna is a documentary play about the 9/11 hero who died at the World Trade Towers after saving at least 12 people, created by Lisa Rafferty.

Welles Crowther, a volunteer firefighter from Nyack, NY, graduated from Boston College in 1999. He worked for Sandler O'Neill, and on that terrible day he was able to find the only staircase down from the 78th floor, where the second plane hit.

Using his trademark red bandanna to cover his nose and mouth, he led survivors downstairs to clear air, and then turned around and went backup to help others. He was killed when the building collapsed, found among other firefighters. His parents discoveredthe circumstances of his heroic actions in May 2002 ,from an article in The New York Times when two survivors spoke of being helped by a man in a red bandanna.

President Obama spoke of Welles during his speech at the opening of the 9/11 Museum on May 15, 2014.

In 2006,  Welles Crowther was posthumously named an honorary New York City firefighter by Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.
